International Workers Memorial Day - 428 Project Launched

April 28th is International Workers Memorial Day – a day set aside to reflect on and remember those who have died or suffered ill health and injury as a result of workplace accidents. In 2006 the International Labour Organisation estimated that 2.2 million workers died in workplace accidents and a further 160 million were suffering from work related ill health.

To commemorate those who have suffered death and injury, and to advance safe and healthy work practices, Expert Ease International are launching the 428 Project.

The 428 Project is an open access service to employers and employees to assist in the assessment and development of management systems and control measures that will ensure the safety of all those at work.

Utilising the principles underpinning Copyleft, the project will drive ethical work practices in the global environment.

Safety Software Gains International Recognition - Press Release 7 October 2005

Downpatrick-based safety consultancy, Expert Ease International (EEI) are to be awarded the IMHOTEP 2006 Trophy at the XXVIII International Symposium of the ISSA Construction Section on Occupational Health & Safety in beautiful colonial city of Salvador, Brazil.

“The International Social Security Association (ISSA) IMHOTEP Competition is open to all private or legal citizens, public or private companies, institutions, profit-making or non profit-making organizations, etc. whose activities are directed in total or in part to the prevention of occupational risks in the construction industry.  The aim of this "Innovation Prize Imhotep" is to make known Good Prevention Practices existing in the Construction Industry, that are applicable to other countries and able to further reduce occupational injuries and diseases on construction sites.

EEI’s contribution to innovative prevention practices started with the development of their groundbreaking operational analysis and control (OAC) model for managing safety, a model that is current the guiding principle behind the total safety practice in one NI Government Agency and who’s principles have been studied by over 1,000 USA companies through the provision of e-learning training programs.

Combining safety knowledge and software development resulted in the development of the OAC (risk assessment) database, which gained the favour of the judges at the final selection stage of the competition at the World Safety Congress in Orlando, Florida last month.  EEI Partners Ciaran McAleenan and Philip McAleenan attended the Congress where they presented a paper “Prevention – A Universal responsibility”, to an audience of several hundred safety professionals, Government officials and businesses from around the world.

 Speaking after receiving notification of their award Managing Partner, Philip McAleenan said;

“We are delighted and honoured that our work has been recognised in such a fashion by our peers.  And we are also proud to be able to contribute to the great tradition of innovation and creativity that Ireland is noted for. It is our intention that as National Safety Bodies concentrate on reducing fatalities and injuries in the construction sector, our methods and products will go some considerable distance in helping to achieve those goals”.

The “IMHOTEP” competition is an opportunity to promote Good Innovative Prevention Practices (GIPP) for construction businesses across the world.  EEI’s contribution to innovative prevention practices started with the development of their groundbreaking operational analysis and control (OAC) model for managing safety. A New Approach to Health and Safety - Press Release 11 November 2002

Making the case for a new approach to health and safety at work, Philip McAleenan, Managing Partner of Expert Ease International argued that 1.2 million work related deaths worldwide each year is a totally unacceptable fact and that the continuing rate of accidents in the work place is evidence that after 30 years of risk management, it has failed to achieve an acceptable level of workplace safety and it is time to rethink the strategy.

Building on the experience in Europe, McAleenan put the case to an international audience at a seminar at the National Safety Council Congress in San Diego last month that risk management fails because it implies that there is an acceptable level of risk and that despite the best efforts of legislators and safety professionals, a managed risk merely improves the odds against an accident occurring, but neither eliminates it nor is capable of predicting when it will occur.

Promoting a new approach developed by Expert Ease International over the past 5 years, he argued that the Operational Analysis and Control (OAC) model is a more effective approach to managing, not simply safety, but the total operation itself.

The OAC “presents a model of operational management where control of the operation flows from the essential foundations of knowledge and understanding of each of the integral elements of the overall operation” and  “that effective operational management necessarily requires each [stakeholder] to adopt a perspective that acknowledges and acts upon the duties and obligations each owes to the others”.

Expert Ease International have been developing the OAC model in practice since 1997 and have already presented their work on the international stage when co-author and Engineering Partner, Ciaran McAleenan presented the concept to the International Construction Industry Symposium in Paris last December.

web-safety.com / MARCOM Partnership

web-safety.com concluded months of negotiation with US company, MARCOM with the launch of over 400 new safety-training products on their award winning e-commerce site. Following the formal signing of their agreement at the worlds largest safety expo in Atlanta, Georgia, Philip McAleenan, Managing Partner of Expert Ease International (EEI), web-safety.com's sister company, stated that he was thrilled that one of the USA's biggest publishers of health & safety materials had chosen us to market their products on the Internet (Visit the Safety Superstore).

"Our aim is to provide on-line Health & Safety facility that contains high quality, affordable products and services covering all that the small and medium sized employer needs to ensure that his/her workforce is informed, trained and equipped to work in complete safety".

EEI embraced the .com revolution two years ago at a previous National Safety Council Expo when they designed a health and safety web site in response to a request from a US city council. Within a few months they had launched web-safety.com and picked up an e-commerce start-up award in N.Ireland. Having met Don Leonard, MARCOM's CEO at the NSC they began discussing the idea with him last year of distributing his products. The signing of their agreement marks the confidence both companies have in the Internet as an invaluable tool in the employer's safety kit.

"We look forward to a long and successful partnership between our two companies, and are confident that in the future web-safety.com will become a one stop shop for employers and safety professionals around the world".
